The Akhal Teke horse is an ancient breed originating from Turkmen, in the southern region of the modern country of Turkmenistan. The Akhal Teke was originally used by nomadic tribes as a war horse because of its great stamina and courage. Later the breed was also used by the Russian Military. Written records of the Akhal Teke have been kept since 1885, although it was not until 1975 that the breed was recognised as a pure bred.

It has a long thin neck set high on a slanting shoulder, prominent withers, a long body, and a silky mane and tail.
